Accord to The Smoking Gun, R&B Rap singer Akon has fabricated his past in order to create a better backstory for his career. Akon has claimed in numerous interviews that he was arrested, charged and “Konvicted” in Georgia for his involvement in a Car theift ring. He claims to have been snitched on by younger consipirtors who felt they should have been getting more monetary gain out of their involvement in the opperation. The Smoking Gun claims to have investigated Akon’s past and found legal documents that do indicate Akon was in fact arrest for possession of a single stolen BMW and held in DeKalb County jail for 5 months before prosecutors dropped all charges against him in April 1999. They claim there was no conviction, no prison term between 1999 and 2002 and he was not facing 75 years.
The Smoking Gun has gone deep into Akon’s past revealing that in a paternity suit his son was listed as being born on July 26, 2001 which would have put the child’s date of conception around late October of the year 2000. Which is right in the middle of Akon’s claimed prison sentence. So either Akon had to have conceived his son during a visit, he donated his sperm to a bank and his girl was artificially inseminated, he is “not the father” like on Maury or he wasn’t in Jail at the time.
The Smoking Gun stated “Akon has overdubbed his biography with the kind of grit and menace that he apparently believes music consumers desire from their hip-hop stars.” It seems Akon was correct as his supposed fabricated stories have lead to both fascinated Journalist always asking Akon to recount his past in interviews and fans purchasing his song by the millions around the world.
Without a doubt, Akon is a talented songwriter but isn’t it sad that someone with his sort of talent would have to resort to this type of story telling just to get a chance at a career? Something really needs to be done about the images we value in pop culture today. Why does these artists feel it necessary to make up stories of a negative past in order to be appealing as a rapper or singer. Why are record companies so happy to feed into these stories? Was it Akon who really made up all of this or was it a clever Universal Music Group Publicist that now has poor Akon in hot water? Only time will tell but this is all very sad.
